What to Do If a Hydraulic Cylinder Leaks Oil
Step 1: Immediate Emergency Handling
1. Stop operating the tractor or machinery right away. Do not continue lifting loads, as oil loss will cause insufficient pressure and accidental falling of heavy goods.
2. Turn off the engine and release all residual pressure inside the hydraulic system slowly. Never disassemble components under pressure.
3. Clean up spilled hydraulic oil on the ground to prevent slipping risks and environmental pollution.
Step 2: Locate the Leakage Point
Carefully check these common leaking positions:
- Piston rod surface and dust wiper seals
- End caps, O-rings and flange connections
- Pipe joints, threaded ports and cylinder weld seams
- Internal leakage inside the cylinder (shown by slow lifting, weak power or automatic sinking of suspended loads)
Step 3: Classified Treatment for Different Leak Types
1. External oil seepage from piston rod seals
- Light seepage caused by dirt stuck on the rod: Clean mud, sand and debris on the piston rod surface; check if there are scratches or pits on the metal rod.
- Obvious dripping due to aging, cracked or worn seals: Replace the sealing kit with original standard accessories. Do not use poor-quality substitutes.
2. Leakage at joints and end covers
- Loose threaded connections: Tighten nuts evenly with proper torque. Avoid over-tightening, which will crush gaskets.
- Damaged gaskets and O-rings: Replace old sealing rings completely.
3. Internal cylinder leakage (no visible external dripping)
Symptoms: Slow lifting speed, the lifted arm sinks automatically, weak hydraulic force.
Solutions: Dismantle the cylinder to inspect piston sealing rings; replace worn internal seals or repair scratched cylinder barrels.
Step 4: Forbidden Wrong Operations
1. Do not blindly tighten bolts excessively to stop leakage. Excessive pressure will deform parts and break seals worse.
2. Do not wrap adhesive tape or glue directly on high-pressure leaking points temporarily; it may burst and cause safety hazards.
3. Do not add more hydraulic oil to cover up leakage problems without repairing the root cause.
Step 5: Follow-up Work After Repair
1. Refill the specified grade of hydraulic oil to the standard liquid level.
2. Test stretch and retract the cylinder repeatedly with no load to confirm no more leakage.
3. Replace the hydraulic filter if the oil has been seriously lost or contaminated.
Step 6: Prevention Advice
After troubleshooting, strengthen daily inspections: keep piston rods clean, replace seals regularly before aging, and avoid overload and violent impact to reduce repeated oil leakage
